Issues

Early childhood education

Up to third grade, kids are learning to read. After 3rd grade, they’re reading to learn. It’s critical that we take full advantage of that time because it’s truly the start of their life of learning. The Transition to Kindergarten program launched in the district is reaching kids furthest from access to early education. In some districts, there’s some competition between TTK and Head Start. In Quincy, I think it’s really important that we pull every lever available to us to ensure that every kid has access to early education, so we’ve chosen to leverage TTK, Head Start and collaboration with the private preschools in town to get as many kids as possible prepared for Kindergarten.

Parent Advocacy

Finding information should be easy. Parents want to know what's happening in their student's classrooms and where to find information on curriculum and student performance. Communication should be clear, pathways should be consistent, and information should be thorough and readily available.

High performing schools

• Data can drive better education outcomes! I’m a data driven leader, both in my day job and in my work as a board director. I asked for the district staff to build out some dashboards so we can evaluate student performance in aggregate and also so the teaching staff can dig into that information and see where students are struggling: then we can deploy resources to help. That data is also where we can see not only how the students are doing, but also if they’re moving in the right direction. That’s how I can tell that our students are making a lot of progress. There’s still work to be done, but it’s really moving in the right direction. And this process will continue to get better and better
