Why I'm Running

I am running for Los Angeles City Council because I believe in the power of community and the importance of serving others. My journey, from growing up in Vallejo to becoming a respected lawyer, has taught me the value of determination and the need for positive change. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to addressing critical issues such as homelessness, housing insecurity, and financial illiteracy. I have actively provided pro bono legal aid to underserved communities and have advocated for affordable housing legislation at both the state and national levels. I have also been actively involved in local organizations, advocating for equitable practices and diversity within the legal profession. My tireless commitment to public service and track record of creating tangible impact makes me the best candidate to serve CD14 on Los Angeles City Council. I deeply care about our community and am ready to work hard to improve the lives of all our residents. Together, we can build a stronger and more vibrant CD14 for all.

Raised by an Air Force Veteran and growing up in Vallejo, CA alongside her two sisters, Teresa's early years were marked by a strong sense of purpose and responsibility having entered the workforce at the remarkable age of 16. However, the tragic loss of her devoted mother in 2016 left Teresa and her family peace, knowing that she was with the Lord. Amidst adversity, it was her father's resilience that instilled an unyielding determination to overcome obstacles and make a positive impact on those who needed it most. Teresa's journey took flight through her academic pursuits, achieving honor roll status at Solano Community College and earning a BA in Communication Studies from CSU, Sacramento, making the dean's list. Her thirst for knowledge led her to the prestigious Howard University School of Law in Washington DC, participating in a transformative Summer Abroad Program in South Africa. Armed with a law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Teresa's educational journey became a stepping stone for a remarkable legal career. She successfully completed Harvard School of Government’s Public Leadership Program. Prior to law school, her commitment to community development shone brilliantly. Holding the position of Vice President of a corporate community development group she collaborated with nonprofit organizations, creating impactful programs to address critical issues such as homelessness, financial illiteracy, and affordable homeownership. Through her efforts, hundreds of employee volunteers were mobilized, resulting in safer and healthier communities uplifting the lives of countless residents. Teresa's passion for community empowerment remained steadfast, during law school she actively contributed to providing pro bono legal aid to underserved communities. Her commitment to service continued in Skid Row, tirelessly working alongside residents creating intentional programming to address their diverse set of needs. Teresa's community engagement is a living testament to her desire for positive change.
