Fun Fact
I am a 7th generation descendant of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson's Hemings slaves, who were born and raised in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County, Virginia, by way of my mother’s familial line through her father, my grandfather. I am a descendant of the Hemings matriarch, Elizabeth Hemings, through her grandson, Brown Colbert. The Hemings slaves carry a rich history at the Monticello Plantation.
Past Experience
I am the best candidate because my professional experience serving children and families, my advanced education in public policy and administration, and my passion for education all intersect to make me well-suited to serve our students, staff, and community. Since my appointment to the Canal Winchester Board of Education in 2020 and election in 2021, I have prioritized open, transparent engagement with residents and stakeholders. I approach every decision with the big picture in mind, guided by what best serves the greater good of our district. I served as the board’s Vice-President in 2023, and President in 2024. I am the Ohio School Boards Association’s legislative delegate representing the Canal Winchester school community and I am a state ambassador for public education through the association.
My Top Issues
Invest in local public education
One of the greatest challenges facing the Canal Winchester school community, similar to districts across Ohio, is the impact of regressive state policies that underfund public schools and prioritize private education. This inequity shifts the burden onto local taxpayers and makes it harder to address the growing and complex needs of public school students.
Early childhood education
My top priorities include strengthening academic achievement, especially for our youngest learners in the area of early literacy, expanding and improving school facilities with projects such as building a new performing arts center along with upgrading athletic fields, and enhancing safety initiatives to ensure a secure learning environment for all students.
