Independents are winning close to home
Independent and nonpartisan candidates from Michigan and across the country have run without major parties, won, and are now holding office.
Monique BryantSchool Board Member, Detroit, MI
“As a nonpartisan candidate running for school board in a large city, it's very difficult. I had to try and reach 100,000 voters. That was a pretty high bar, but it didn't deter me.”
Kamal AlswafyCity Council, Dearborn, MI
“I pride myself on being independent. Some people don't like that because you're not teaming up with them.”
David D. KingFormer Gubernatorial Candidate
“My campaign is focused on people over party. We believe that both parties, whether you stand on blue or red, are dividing us. It's destroying our nation. It is releasing poison and hatred. As an independent, I always love to tell people to meet us in the middle and have a mind of working together.”
