Independents are winning close to home
Independent and nonpartisan candidates from North Carolina and across the country have run without major parties, won, and are now holding office.
Kathy LarsonSchool Board Candidate, Wayne County, NC
“I'm very passionate about being unaffiliated, intentionally so, because I don't think that either side has it all figured out. I don't agree 100% with every single thing on either side. I particularly am disturbed and saddened by the increasing division in our country between the two parties, the anger, vitriol, and rudeness.”
Jason CapelleDistrict Supervisor, Orange County, VA
“I won as an independent against a person with a very well-recognized family name. I beat that person by about 12%, and the candidate that the Republicans endorsed came in dead last.”
Stacy HallCity Council Member, Fairfax, VA
“We just didn't feel like it takes a Republican or Democrat to decide if we should fix potholes or repave our roads. It's just people doing things for their community.”
