On the Ballot: Amber King for Snohomish Co. PUD Commissioner
Amber King is a non-partisan, GoodParty.org Certified candidate running for Public Utility District (PUD) Commissioner in District 2 of Snohomish County, Washington. District 2 is located in the southwest corner of Snohomish County and includes Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mukilteo.
On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, King will compete in the non-partisan primary election against two other candidates: Julieta Altamirano Crosby and Micah Rowland. The incumbent PUD Commissioner in District 2, Rebecca Wolfe, is not seeking reelection. This leaves the field open for new voices and fresh perspectives.
King shared with GoodParty.org why she is the best candidate to serve Snohomish County as PUD Commissioner.
“I am the only person in this race with utility experience and with a focus on infrastructure contracts, real estate, and construction,” King said. “I'm going for #peoplepower and a focus on experience and fiscal responsibility.”
With a background in contract management and finance, King is well-suited for the position of PUD Commissioner. The Snohomish County Public Utility District is a publicly owned utility, and its board of commissioners is responsible for representing residents while setting rates and keeping electricity and water sustainable in the face of growing demand.
“I have worked in many industries and in government agencies of all shapes and sizes,” King said. “I have been part of the National Infrastructure Banking coalition for the past several years, and I currently work in rural utilities for a regional non-profit.”
Because of King’s background and experience, the editorial board of The Herald has endorsed her as the best candidate for PUD Commissioner.
King said she stepped up to run for commissioner because constituents asked her to run for office. She decided to campaign as a truly non-partisan candidate because of the brokenness of partisan politics.
“I have been supporting candidates and campaigns outside of the two-party system since 2018. American party politics is utterly broken, and most common people do not identify with either [party],” King said.
King’s top priorities for her time in office include affordability, investing in infrastructure, economic development, and sustainability.
“I recognize the financial challenges families face. I will prioritize finding cost-effective solutions to keep utility rates equitable while maintaining high-quality services and reliability,” King said.
In regard to infrastructure, King plans to advocate for strategic investments to upgrade Snohomish County’s utility systems. This way, the county’s public utilities can keep pace with growing demands. Ensuring that residents have access to reliable utilities also makes it easier for new businesses to thrive, driving economic growth.
“I am committed to exploring sound renewable sources, maintaining and investing in existing infrastructure, and advocating for environmentally responsible practices that reduce rates and enhance health and cybersecurity,” King said.
Overall, King said she is excited to serve Snohomish County and provide innovative solutions for residents.
“I love talking to everyday people, hearing concerns and ideas, and seeing how I can help or find resources to solve problems or collaborative solutions,” King said.
