Environment / Energy As your representative, I would work with the Legislature to compel the state to agree to co-manage our fisheries. Second, we must put a stop to business-as-usual with the trawling industry, including 100% observer monitoring on vessels as well as re-working appointments to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Education To account for increased costs, we must raise the Base Student Allocation (BSA), something our current representative has repeatedly voted against in the House. We must also begin forward funding school districts so that they can plan ahead and build modern rigorous education systems, instead of scrambling each May to piece together their budgets. Lastly, we need to increase teacher retention and bring back a defined benefits program for teachers. Taxes / Budget The Permanent Fund and the Permanent Fund Dividend are crucial to Alaska’s long-term success. Unfortunately, partisan politics has consumed the debate over how to protect both. It’s time to get the politicians out of the way and place the Dividend in the State Constitution, along with a long-term fiscal plan that resolves our structural budget deficit.
