Fun Fact

My wife Laura and I both view helping others to be a life long commitment, which is why she's worked as a nurse for over 30 years and I continue my work supporting national security missions. In my free time I'm a voracious reader, do a bit of fly fishing, and try to improve my golf game, but I primarily enjoy spending time with my wife. We've been married for nearly 37 years and she's my best friend. Our daughters have both moved away from home and we travel to visit them whenever we can.

Past Experience

After 20 years in the US Army, my wife and I settled in Rockbridge County because we love the natural beauty and small town atmosphere. We also wanted to offer our daughters stability during their middle and high school years that would have been impossible if we'd remained in the Army. Since moving here in 2005, I've worked for large businesses, run my own small business, and served on the County's Economic Development Authority (EDA) for eight years. Although the EDA has accomplished quite a bit during this time, I feel that there's more work to be done. My three priorities if I'm elected as Supervisor for Kerrs Creek include economic development, affordable housing, and better child care options. The biggest challenge that we face is that the workforce in Rockbridge County is shrinking while the retirement age population is growing. We need to better support the health and growth of our farms and businesses while also attracting young families, skilled workers, and new businesses. We also need to encourage our local high school and college graduates to settle here rather than moving away. I'm running for office because, while the EDA has made progress on some of these issues, there's a lot more work to be done and that I'd have more direct influence as a Supervisor. My top priorities are economic development, affordable housing, and improving access to childcare. I feel strongly that a part-time public service position should be a volunteer position, so I will not accept a salary from the County. Being a member of the Board of Supervisors requires the ability to collaborate and cooperate with the other Board members. I'm the only candidate who has a positive working relationship with the Supervisors, so I'm well positioned to help make things happen for our citizens.

My Top Issues

Increasing affordable housing options

If our housing options are not affordable and attractive, we won't attract or retain the workforce we need to sustain or grow our local economy.

Attracting and retaining businesses

It's critical that we work harder to support the health and growth of our local farms and businesses and attract new businesses to the area.

Affordable Child Care

We have a serious shortage of child care options in the county, and we need to explore options to incentivize people to open child care businesses and keep them reasonably priced.
