Fun Fact
I've lived and worked in 4 continents and been to 5. I've traveled to over 30 countries. My wife and I took our daughter on a backpacking trip from Lima, Peru down to Lake Titicaca and up to Guatemala City when she was 7 years old. We took local buses and ferries the entire way. I speak conversational Spanish and a bit of French. I am a cat lover.
Past Experience
As a dedicated classroom teacher with 18 years of experience, I've seen firsthand the devastating impact of bureaucratic red tape and misguided policies on our education system. I've worked with Special Education students in the U.S. and abroad, and I've witnessed how excessive paperwork, high-stakes testing, and lack of planning time can undermine the quality of instruction and hinder student growth. I've seen how the relentless pursuit of 'accountability' has led to a culture of teaching to the test, rather than teaching to the child.
But I've also seen a different way. In my experience working in international schools, I've seen how a more streamlined approach to testing and assessment can provide valuable insights into student learning, while also giving teachers the autonomy to teach and plan effectively. I've seen how prioritizing recess, free time, and play can help students develop into happy, healthy, and well-rounded individuals.
As your delegate, I'll fight to reform our education system and make it more effective, efficient, and student-centered. I'll propose policies that reduce the burden of testing and paperwork, and give teachers more time to plan and teach. I'll advocate for competency-based progression, with clear exit points and minimum competencies that ensure students are prepared for success. I'll work to eliminate grade inflation and ensure that our schools are focused on helping students master essential skills, rather than just passing them through.
But education is only half the story. As someone who has lived and worked abroad, I've seen how other countries prioritize healthcare as a fundamental human right. I've been shocked by the complexity and inefficiency of our healthcare system, where patients are often left with surprise bills and uncertain costs. I believe that healthcare is a moral imperative, and that every Virginian deserves access to quality, affordable care.
That's why I'll fight to ensure that every resident of Virginia has access to healthcare, regardless of their income or social status. I'll work to build on the progress we've made in expanding Medicaid, and to explore new ways to reduce costs and improve outcomes. I'll advocate for a Medicare-for-All system, where every American has access to comprehensive, affordable care. And until we achieve that goal, I'll work to make sure that Virginia leads the way in providing healthcare to all its citizens, regardless of their background or circumstances.
