Fun Fact

I love painting and have even led community art workshops. A lot of my artwork is inspired by flowers—I’m drawn to how they symbolize growth, resilience, and renewal. Just like in art, I believe in nurturing creativity and helping people bloom in their own way.

Past Experience

Mimi’s work centers on empowering youth and building community. She brings years of experience mentoring young people, leading programs, and driving change. Youth Mentor & Educator – Taught at the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids Sunday School and serves on the ICCR Youth Committee, helping young people find their voice and grow into leaders. Program Builder – Developed the RISE Arts Program with the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy, creating healing spaces where participants could blossom through art. Nonprofit Leader – Board Member with Our Future Iowa, nurturing fellows as they bring their community passion projects to life, while also leading fundraising efforts to sustain growth. Founder & Organizer – Co-created Artivists of Iowa, planting the roots of an organization that merges art and activism through volunteer-driven demonstrations.

My Top Issues

Invest in local public education

As a CRCSD School Board Member, I want to: Expand academic and extracurricular programming to provide all students with opportunities to excel, preparing Cedar Rapids to be a competitive and innovative school district. Implement restorative and community-centered practices to strengthen relationships, repair harm, and enhance student safety and well-being. Oppose the use of vouchers that divert public funds away from our public schools. Support responsible bonds to fund essential renovations that modernize our schools, avoiding the ongoing cycle of temporary fixes.

Celebrating and promoting cultural diversity

I believe in: Supporting social and emotional learning as a vital part of preparing students to be future-ready. Ensuring equity for all students while building a culture of belonging where every child feels valued and safe. Reflecting the rich diversity of our community in our teachers, staff, and school leaders. Meaningfully equiping educators with high-quality, culturally responsive professional development and wellness support.

Promoting inclusivity and diverse representation in decision-making processes

I am dedicated to: Connecting directly with CRCSD families through consistent outreach. Prioritizing reachability and transparency in all decision-making. Meeting families where they are, ensuring accessibility in communication methods, language, and timing. Strengthening open, responsive communication between schools and the community. Empowering families to be informed, involved, and confident in sharing their perspectives. Involving educators and students in decision-making and fostering a culture that values their expertise and innovation.
