Infrastructure / Transportation Hould Madeira Beach roads be designed so that our city is the destination or simply a pass-through? We need to continue to make improvements that benefit local residential traffic patterns but discourages the use of our streets from travelers heading to a different destination. Taxes / Budget I endorse impact fees for new commercial development to offset the cost of additional services needed to support the financial impact to the community. Housing I oppose residential impact fees due to the overwhelming restrictions to upgrade single family homes due to FEMA guidelines. The city should not have the power to restrict major renovations of our aging homes and then charge an impact fee for upgrades when you rebuild. Environment / Energy Red Tide is a natural occurrence, but in recent years has overwhelmingly impacted our beaches and way of life. This must be due to an overabundance of nutrients entering our waterways. The City of Madeira Beach, along with our neighboring coastal communities must join and speak together as one voice to the State and Federal agencies to demand resources to inspect our commercial industries and wastewater plants for pollutants that are spilling these nutrients into our waterways as a by-product of their operations. Infrastructure / Transportation In lieu of a high & dry, the plans to upgrade the City Marina should be to create an attractive area for boaters to gather before and after a day on the water. I envision an active marina including fishing charters, a restaurant(s), retail and marine services for local boat owners. There can still be some boat storage, but just a scaled down version of what has been proposed. We want to avoid breaking any contracts with existing customers that are currently storing their boats at the marina. Infrastructure / Transportation Preserving the “fishing village” character of Johns Pass Village is a top priority. The wooden structures and boardwalk are a reminder of our rich history. New development is inevitable, but this existing architecture should be embraced and never replaced by new commercial development trends. Infrastructure / Transportation Tourism is here to stay, and the city needs to embrace it and maximize revenues that come directly into the city. Parking revenues are one of the few tourism dollars that come directly into the city. The city needs to continue to invest in parking and develop other tourism related revenue streams. Infrastructure / Transportation The time to move our coastal electricity underground is – NOW, but can we afford it? The city must continue to make every effort to secure Federal, State and Utility grants to bury our power and communication lines. This must be a priority.
