Taxes / Budget Fiscal responsibility is essential for the Fairbanks City Council, especially due to our imbalanced tax base. Being smart and targeted in our spending will maximize the value we receive and increase the quality of life available in our city. Infrastructure / Transportation Pedestrian needs must be met. Too many pedestrians have to traverse unsafe paths and it’s the responsibility of the city to make sure that, regardless of the mode of transportation, that we can get around Fairbanks safely and comfortably. Additionally, improved transportation options should be explored to support gaps in the Borough’s transportation system. Criminal Justice / Public Safety Making sure that we meet the needs of our firefighters is necessary for the health of our city. Fire code inspections should be free for businesses located within the Fairbanks city limits, with discounts for business outside the city that require multiple inspections. Criminal Justice / Public Safety Safety begins with our police force, and it’s important to have a police force that wants to live in our community rather than one that is paid to live in our community. We need to make sure that our police are from our community, that the pay stays competitive, and that we are able to meet the operational needs of our highly effective officers. Housing More attention needs to be placed on compensating and protecting tenants affected by construction projects. Housing Greater effort should be made by the city to increase the amount of leasable space downtown, with a focus on construction and preservation rater than demolition.
