Past Experience

My name is Will Rubel, and I’m running for the Dallas Center–Grimes School Board this fall. My decision to run for school board began two years ago, after attending a candidate forum. What I saw that night left me concerned. Since then, I’ve made it a point to attend nearly every school board meeting—not just to observe, but to learn where we can do better. One of the biggest areas where we can improve is communication—with parents and with the broader community. Every resident should know who their district board member is and understand their school board member works for them and represents them and their values. Also, when parents and community members reach-out to administrators and school board members, they need to know they will be treated with respect, and know their concerns are being heard. For those who may not know me, I’ve lived in Grimes home for the past 25 years. I’m a husband of 35 years, a father to two DCG graduates, a grandfather, a person of faith, and a veteran with 28 years of public service.

My Top Issues

Parent and Community Involvement in Public Education

We need to do a better job of communicating with parents and proactively seeking their involvement. Parents should know their local school board members and feel safe to reach out to them and know they will be heard and treated with respect.

Social Media MisInformation and DisInformation

We, as a community, need to better communicate with social media influencers in our community, and ensure their school-related issues and concerns are directed to the appropriate school administrators or board members, before on-line communities begin to spread false information.

Proactive community engagement regarding school-related issues

When a parent of community member has a concern, we should be reaching-out to them to address their concerns. Parents and community members should not have to make public comments at school board meetings to get the attention of administrators, school board members, or other community members.
