Eligibility Requirements

Candidates for District Court Judge must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, a citizen of the state for at least 1 year, and a registered voter. Must be licensed to practice law in Alabama. Must have resided in the circuit in which candidate seeks to serve for one year prior to election. No one may be elected or appointed to a judicial office after reaching the age of 70. Must have been licensed by the Alabama State Bar Association a combined total of 3 years or more, or by any other state bar association for a combined total of 3 years or more, prior to beginning a term of office or appointment to serve a vacant term of office.

Filing Requirements

Must be nominated by major political party or file petition to run as independent candidate. If qualifying through a major political party, candidates must pay the required qualifying fee set forth by the party. The number of signatures on the petition must equal or exceed at least three percent of the qualified electors who cast ballots for the office of governor in the last general election in the district for which ballot access is being sought. Within five days of becoming a candidate, you must file an Appointment of Principal Campaign Committee Form with the Secretary of State, if seeking election to a state or county office. Candidates must also file a Statement of Economic Interests form as well as a Disclosure Statement of Financial Interests form.
