The City Legislature is the municipality's governing body, responsible for voting on ordinances and policies, and often is in charge of hiring a city manager.
Members of the city commission shall have been residents of the City of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, for a period of at least one (1) year immediately prior to qualifying for office, and, in addition thereto, shall have the qualifications of electors under the laws of the State of Florida.
Filing Requirements
File a petition that states the name of each person whose name is presented for a place upon the ballot and that he or she is a candidate for the office of city commissioner for the City of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and the said petition shall state the zone from which the candidate is running. The petition must be signed by at least twenty-five (25) duly registered, qualified electors of the city, fifteen (15) of which must be residents from the zone from which said candidate is running. Each elector signing a petition shall add to his or her signature the date of signing. All signatures shall be made with ink or indelible pencil. Law requires that a candidate must also file the following: Form 1 Statement of Financial Interests, Loyalty Oath and Oath of Candidate (Form DS-DE 25 for Non-Partisan Office), Assessment fee, Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository (Form DS-DE 9) and Statement of Candidate (Form DS-DE 84), unless you have already filed these forms.
