The candidate must be at 30 years old, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the state for at least 5 years.

- Filing fee is $0; signature requirement of Major Party candidates must be equal to 4,500 signatures, including a minimum of 500 signatures from each of the state's congressional districts. Minor Party candidates must file petition signatures equal to 2 percent of the total votes cast for secretary of state in the last election in the district.
