About this position
The county legislature is responsible for the adoption of all local legislation and levy of property taxes. Other specific powers include: make appropriations, incur indebtedness and adopt an annual budget, create, alter, combine or abolish administrative units not headed by elected officials and to confirm appointments made by the County Executive; adopt the equalization rate for the City of Binghamton and the 16 towns; award all contracts for professional services in excess of $15,000.

Eligibility Requirements
Shall be a resident elector of the district he represents at the time of his nomination, his election and throughout his term of office. No elective or appointive official of any town, village or city or any other municipality shall be eligible to hold office as a County Legislator.
Filing Requirements
No filing fee. Petition signature requirement: 5% of enrolled voters of the party in the district or 500, whichever is less (major party); 5% of the total number of votes cast for governor at the last gubernatorial election in the district or 1,500, whichever is less (independent)
