Each Common Council Member functions to regulate and protect the interests of residents within their Ward, and is authorized to introduce, adopt, amend or repeal local laws, ordinances, resolutions and regulations pertaining to property and government affairs within the City. Ward boundaries are established by the Common Council to best represent the demographics within the City, and are delineated primarily on Census information.
Must be a qualified elector of the city and a resident of the ward candidate seeks to represent.
Filing Requirements
No filing fee. Petition signature requirement: For candidates running for party nomination: 5% of enrolled voters of the party in the ward or 500, whichever is less; for independent candidates: 5% of the total number of votes cast for ward at the last gubernatorial election in the town or 1500, whichever is less
