Job description

The State Supreme Court is responsible for correcting the errors of the inferior state courts. It exclusively hears appeals on legal issues from inferior state courts.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must be a registed elector of the state and be licensed to practice law in Alabama. No one may be elected or appointed to a judicial office after reaching the age of 70. Must have been licensed by the Alabama State Bar Association a combined total of 10 years or more, or by any other state bar association for a combined total of 10 years or more, prior to beginning a term of office or appointment to serve a vacant term of office. Must not have been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment in the state or federal penitentiary.

Filing requirements: Filing Fee (Major party candidates only): 2% of the annual salary for the office. Petition Signature Requirements (independent and minor party candidates only): 3% of the number of votes cast in the district for the office of governor in the last general election.
