Job description
The Mayor is the chief executive of the city and responsible for the administration and management of over 30 city departments. There are over 30 different departments.
The Mayor submits proposals and recommendations to the City Council and is active in the enforcement of the city’s ordinances. The Mayor proposes most city-wide policies. These include business transactions, changes to the municipal code, bond issuance and appointments.
The Mayor also submits the city’s annual budget and appoints city officers, department commissioners or directors, and members of over 120 city boards and commissions, including the Chicago Board of Education, Chicago City Colleges Board, Chicago Plan Commission, Ethics Board, Chicago Police Board, Chicago Park District Board
Eligibility requirements
Candidate must be a qualified elector of the municipality and have 1 year of residency in the municipality preceding the election.
