Job description
Municipal Court is responsible for the adjudication of city and park district ordinance violation cases, which include Class B misdemeanor offenses, infractions, non-criminal traffic offenses, and other non-criminal offenses. The jurisdiction of this court is limited to Class B misdemeanors with a maximum penalty possible of $1,500 fine and 30 days in jail, with the exception of Theft and Destruction of Public Property, which has a maximum penalty of $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail.
Eligibility requirements
Candidate must be a qualified elector of the city. Must be a licensed attorney, unless an attorney is unavailable or not interested in serving. State law requires each new municipal judge attend two educational seminars and all others attend one course conducted by the Supreme Court in each calendar year. If a municipal judge fails to meet this requirement without an excused absence from the Continuing Judicial Education Commission, the judge’s name is referred to the Judicial Conduct Commission for disciplinary action.
