Job description
The Register of Deeds primary function is to make and preserve a record of instruments required or allowed by law to be filed or recorded, including but not limited to deeds, powers of attorney, deeds of trust, mortgages, liens, contracts, plats, leases, judgments, wills, court orders, military discharges, records under the Uniform Commercial Code (primarily fixture filings), and other types of documents. The register's office is in the county seat, and the records and papers must remain in the office at all times.
Eligibility requirements
All persons of the age of eighteen years who are citizens of the United States and of TN, and have been inhabitants of the state, county, district, or circuit are qualified to hold office under the authority of this state unless this person: has been convicted of a felony; has not paid a judgment for money received in an official capacity, which is due to the US, TN, or any county; has defaulted to the treasury at the time of election (in which case the election is void); serves in the armed forces of the United States; or is a member of Congress or holds any office of profit or trust under any foreign power. Eligible candidates must reside in the county in which they are seeking office.
