Job description
Serves as clerk and custodian of records for the Commissioners Court, Constitutional County Court and Statutory County Courts. Acts as a recorder and custodian of important public records, including all bonds, deeds, birth and death certificates, assumed names and livestock brands, ensuring that records are maintained in a secure, archival manner. Issues marriage licenses. Serves as chief elections officer in most counties.

Paperwork instructions: Submit paperwork to the applicable County Party Chair's office (major or minor parties); independent candidates submit paperwork with the County Judge's/Clerk's office.
Filing requirements: Party-affiliated candidates should file an application for a place on the ballot to their respective party chair. This should be accompanied by either a filing fee of $1250 or a nominating petition with a number of signatures equal to the 2% of the number of votes cast in the previous general election in this district (or 500, whichever is lower). Independent candidates should file a Declaration of Intent to Run as an Independent Candidate during the primary filing period. In addition, independent candidates will need to collect a number of signatures equal to the 2% of the number of votes cast in the previous general election in this district.
