Job description
The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the municipality. They often preside over council meetings and may have the power to hire and fire heads of municipal departments.
Eligibility requirements
The mayor and each councilperson shall be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, a resident of The City of Brownwood, and shall have resided in said city for one (1) year before the time of election at which he or she offers for election, and shall have the qualifications of elector in the city. He or she shall not be indebted to the city for back taxes or otherwise; shall not hold any other office of emolument and shall not be interested in the emoluments of any contract, job, work, or service of or with the city, nor shall he or she be the owner of stock in, or be an officer or director of any public service corporation within the city or without the city, but serving inhabitants in the city, nor shall he or she be the owner or proprietor of any public service utility of the city. Any such officer of the city ceasing to possess any of the qualifications herein required, shall forfeit his or her office or position, and any contract with the city in which any officer or employee of the city shall, or may be, or become interested, may be declared void by the council. Each councilperson shall reside within the ward for which he or she offers for election and if he or she shall cease to reside in that ward, his or her office shall become vacant; provided, however, that any person with the above qualifications, except as to residence, who shall have been a resident for a period of not less than one (1) year immediately preceding his or her election of any of the territory not formerly within the corporate limits of said city, but which is annexed under the provisions of the city charter shall be eligible for said office. If the mayor or any councilperson fails to maintain the foregoing qualifications, or shall be absent from three (3) consecutive regularly scheduled meetings without valid excuse, the city council must, at its next regular meeting, declare a vacancy to exist and shall fill said vacancy as set forth herein.
