Job description
The City Legislature is the municipality's governing body, responsible for voting on ordinances and policies, and often is in charge of hiring a city manager.
Eligibility requirements
Must be a registered voter of the county for elections held throughout the county and a registered voter of the municipality for elections held within the municipality: Provided, That if the required number of persons eligible to serve as election officials for a municipal election are not available or are not willing to serve as election officials for a municipal election, a registered voter of the county in which the municipality is located may serve as an election official for elections held within the municipality; Must be able to read and write the English language; May not be a candidate on the ballot or an official write-in candidate in the election for any office, other than for district, county, or state political party executive committee; May not be the parent, child, sibling, or spouse of a candidate on the ballot for any office, other than for district, county, or state political party executive committee, or an official write-in candidate for any office, other than for district, county, or state political party executive committee, in the precinct where the official serves; May not be a person prohibited from serving as an election official pursuant to any other federal or state statute; and May not have been previously convicted of a violation of any election law.

Filing requirements: Filing Fee = $60. Independent candidates are required to obtain not less than one (1) percent of the entire vote cast at the last preceding general election for the office being sought, but which shall never be less than twenty-five (25) total signatures. A candidate seeking nomination to any office who is unable to pay the filing fee may qualify a petition with signatures from four qualified voters for each whole dollar of the filing fee. Signatures obtained on an in-lieu-of-filing-fee petition shall not be counted toward the number of voters required to sign a nomination certificate in accordance with section twenty-three of this article.
