The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the municipality. They often preside over council meetings and may have the power to hire and fire heads of municipal departments.
Candidates must be a United States citizen; be a qualified voter of the State of Texas; be 21 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment; be a resident of the city for at least 12 months as of the deadline for filing for the office, and use a city residence address for voter registration and driver's license purposes; be a resident of his or her city district for at least six months on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, for a councilmember representing a single-member district; have not been convicted of a felony for which he or she has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
