The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the municipality. They often preside over council meetings and may have the power to hire and fire heads of municipal departments.
Any person who files for office to serve as Council Member or Mayor, shall be a citizen and registered voter of the State of Texas, and shall have resided within the State of Texas for a period of twelve months and within the City for not less than six months next preceding his election. A member of the Council ceasing to reside in the City during the term for which he was elected shall immediately forfeit his office.
Filing Requirements
Any qualified person who desires to become a candidate for election to a place on the Council shall file with the City Clerk at least 30 days prior to the election day, an application for his name to appear on the ballot. Such application shall clearly designate by number the place on the Council to which the candidate seeks election and shall contain a sworn statement by the candidate that he is fully qualified under the laws of Texas and the provisions of the city charter to hold the office he seeks.
