Meet eligibility requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Texas for one year, a resident of the district from which elected for 6 months prior to the filing deadline, a registered voter in the area from which elected, and a practicing lawyer or judge in the State of Texas.

- $750 filing fee. Petition signature requirements for Party candidates: Whichever is lesser, 500 signatures or 2% of the total vote received in the district, county, or precinct, as applicable, by all candidates for governor in the most recent gubernatorial general election, unless that number is under 50, in which case the required number of signatures is the lesser of: 50 or 20% of that total vote. Independent candidates: Whichever is lesser, 500 signatures or 5% of the total vote received in the district, county, or precinct, as applicable, by all candidates for governor in the most recent gubernatorial general election, unless that number is under 25, in which case the required number of signatures is the lesser of: 25 or 10% of that total vote.
