The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the municipality. They often preside over council meetings and may have the power to hire and fire heads of municipal departments.
An individual may become a candidate for any municipal office if: the individual is a registered voter; and the individual has resided within the municipality in which the individual seeks to hold elective office for the 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election; or the territory in which the individual resides was annexed into the municipality, the individual has resided within the annexed territory or the municipality the 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election.
Filing Requirements
Filing Fee of $315, or in lieu of fee, submit a petition signed by 45 residents from each council district, for a total of 315 residents who are at least eighteen (18) years old. This petition will be construed as an alternative to payment of the required fee for persons for whom such fee would create a financial hardship. 25 signatures from each council district are required, which is in addition to the 315 signatures gathered in lieu of the filing fee.
