The City Legislature is the municipality's governing body, responsible for voting on ordinances and policies, and often is in charge of hiring a city manager.
An individual may become a candidate for any municipal office if: the individual is a registered voter; and the individual has resided within the municipality in which the individual seeks to hold elective office for the 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election; or the territory in which the individual resides was annexed into the municipality, the individual has resided within the annexed territory or the municipality the 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election.
Filing Requirements
Filing Fee of $75, or in lieu of fee, submit a petition signed by 75 residents within the council district who are at least eighteen (18) years old. This petition will be construed as an alternative to payment of the required fee for persons for whom such fee would create a financial hardship. 25 signatures from residents of the council district are required, which is in addition to the 75 candidate files in lieu of the filing fee.
