Fun Fact
I was appointed to the city's first Racial Equity Community Advisory Commitee in 2018. I'm now in my second term on the Advisory on Aging. The RECAC in particular gave me a startling glimpse into City Hall, and I've tried to study and understand it better ever since. It's not easy.
When I lived in Farmington with in-laws, I was a sports official year-round, but particularly passionate about baseball. I umped a game where former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak was in the stands and his son Charlie, now a prominent local figure himself, was on the team.
My music columns ran in City Pages, Star Tribune, and my college paper Minnesota Daily. (I was also a serviceable drummer if I say so.) After five years at Sam Goody/Best Buy HQ, I retrained as a nurse in long-term care, the second-best decision I ever made. If I can do it, anyone can, and it taught me that workforce development programs and (re)training schools are so important, for individuals and communities.
Past Experience
I'm a former Twin Cities entertainment reporter, now a 17-year Practical Nurse for State of Minnesota. I'm a Minneapolis native who's lived through the city's good times and rough patches. I'm not a deep political insider, but I know Minneapolis is facing a tough economic future and few leaders seem to facing it seriously. We can be a midwestern powerhouse again, but it's going to take realistic prioritization and committed energy to fiscal discipline, quality core service and economic innovation to fill miles of empty space both downtown and many neighborhoods. I know ``Less is more,'' is not a winning slogan. ``Less is less'' is even worse. But we have to be realistic. Minneapolis is broke, but not broken. Yet!
I'm running a lean campaign at first, but I've been a one-time campaign treasurer and a longtime public-sector union treasurer. Besides being a targeted rabblerouser at my work site, I've been a much-requested labor union steward among the largely immigrant workforce. I've also been a give-time Mpls. election judge.
My Top Issues
Attracting and retaining businesses
Many Minneapolis leaders have seemed stridently anti-business and Minneapolis is feeling the effects. Business owners are shutting down and/or finding our near suburbs far more attractive. Will labor really grow strong if there are fewer and fewer jobs? Let's find a sensible balance here, or Minneapolis will not be the economic engine of a state much longer. I would think we can all agree on the need for workforce development, can't we? Many people say Public Safety is always Priority #1, but I think that is so fundamentally critical to economic strength it should go without saying. If owners can't safely operate, it's all for nothing.
Ranked Choice Voting
There's growing concern our caucuses and conventions are flawed to say the least. It feels like gatekeeping in ward races that are technically non-partisan and where RCV is in place already. This campaign is reaching out to voters who feel left out of the democratic and governmental process.
Enhancing transparency and accountability
Minneapolis needs to greatly streamline its missions and endeavors and prioritize methodically. We can't do much of anything if we try to do everything. There is growing agreement Minneapolis needs much better program evaluation. Minneapolis government has grown so quickly in the past decade that we need a reset.
Who I'm Running Against
Jamison Whiting (Democrat Party)
Former private firm lawyer now working for the Minneapolis City Attorney's office, reportedly focused on police reform. It's an impressive accomplishment, and it's a subject that never seems to go away in Minneapolis, but we do have other concerns.
Mariam DeMello (Democrat Party)
Also a trained lawyer, formerly having worked in county attorney's office and Minneapolis city. She is now on staff of St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter III. She also has a prestigious role on Minneapolis Charter Commission. I actually supported her early in the campaign, but decided to jump in late myself.
