Job description
The DC State Board of Education is an independent agency within the executive branch of the Government of the District of Columbia which works to advise the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), which is the district's state education agency. The Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing DC at large, in addition to two student representatives. While the OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding, the Board approves education policies, sets academic standards, and determines teacher qualifications. Board members serve four-year terms and receive an annual stipend of $15,000.
Eligibility requirements
To hold the office of Ward Member of the State Board of Education, an individual must (DC Official Code §38-2651(e)(1)): Be a qualified elector in the District of Columbia. Reside in the school ward from which they seek nomination. Have resided in the ward from which they are nominated for one year immediately preceding the election. Not hold another elective office, other than delegate or alternate delegate to a convention of a political party nominating candidates for President and Vice President of the United States. Not be an officer or employee of the District of Columbia government or of the Board.
