The County Coroner/Sheriff is a joint position responsible for investigating the manner and cause of death for residents in the county jurisdiction, as well as keeping the peace within the county, by ensuring offenders enter into bonds, with sureties for keeping the peace, and appear at the next Circuit Court.
Eligibility requirements
A candidate must be 18 years of age; a citizen of the state; and an elector of the county in which the duties of the office are to be exercised; or (b) in the case of an office consolidated between two or more counties, an elector in one of the counties in which the duties of the office are to be exercised. Candidates for coroner must successfully complete the basic coroner course or equivalent educational requirement prior to taking office. Candidates for sheriff must not have been convicted of a crime for which they could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary and must be elligible to receive and disseminate criminal justice information through the criminal justice information network.
