The elected Sheriff also has the title and responsibilities of the County Coroner. The marriage of the two professions provides for a more efficient means of providing care to the citizens of Gallatin County and the investigation experience gained by law enforcement officers readily lends itself to death investigations.

A candidate must be 18 years of age; a citizen of the state; and (a) an elector of the county in which the duties of the office are to be exercised; or (b) in the case of an office consolidated between two or more counties, an elector in one of the counties in which the duties of the office are to be exercised.
