The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the County by State Statute. His or her responsibilities include law enforcement, administration of the jail, Superintendent of the Work House, and security of the Courts. Law enforcement includes a wide range of duties including prevention and investigation of crimes on persons and property, service of civil and criminal warrants, and patrolling of county and state roadways.
Eligibility requirements
To hold the office of county sheriff, a person must be at least 25 years of age and must be a qualified voter of the county and a resident of the county for 1 full year prior to the date of the qualifying deadline. He or she must possess at least a high school diploma or its equivalent in educational training as recognized by the TN state board of education. Eligible candidates have not been convicted or pleaded guilty to any misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or any federal law; not have been discharged from the armed forces of the United States. He or she must be fingerprinted, certified by a psychiatrist as free of any mental disorder. He or she must have experience as a peace officer and as a law enforcement officer.
