Independents are winning close to home

Independent and nonpartisan candidates from Mississippi and across the country have run without major parties, won, and are now holding office.

Missy EvansMayor, Hartselle, AL
“Our campaign slogan was, ‘Let's get moving,’ and that really was intentionally meant to reflect a couple of different things. First of all, a more collaborative approach to our community.”
Jim MacMillanCandidate for Sheriff, Garland County, AR
“You fight the machine with the little machine that you have, and that's why I want to maximize what you all have. As an independent, you don't have the resources that the parties do.”
Joseph FaulknerAlderman, Fayetteville, TN
“As an independent who has viewpoints from all over the spectrum on different issues, I think it's important to keep that independence. It doesn't have anything to do with repaving streets or filling potholes or making sure our animal shelter runs correctly. When people would ask, 'Are you Republican? Are you a Democrat?' I just said: I'm an independent and I'm going to represent everyone.”
